I recommend, hands down, Rod
Machado’s Private Pilot Handbook far above any other private pilot
instructional book. Its explanations are very clear and it is packed with
humor making it a very pleasant read. Rod Machado and I have the same teaching
philosophy: that a serious, complicated subject taught with lots of humor is
easier and more enjoyable to learn. It is more expensive than other books but
well worth it. You can get the book at
Rod Machado’s Private Pilot Handbook
The hardcopy book is $64.95; the electronic edition is $49.95 and the audio book with hardcopy book is $129.95. I also recommend the Handbook (optional) for $ 19.95.
If you want to save some money, I also recommend another very good book: the Pilot's Handbook of
Aeronautical Knowledge. It is the "bible" of aviation training books published by the
Federal Aviation Administration. You can view or download it for FREE at this website:
Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge.
Some people who like to read (or are masochists) use both books.
The class syllabus will have chapter references for both
books above. There are other books and some other free internet references available (I
will discuss these in the first class) but if you choose to use them, you will
be responsible to coordinate which sections to read for each class.

Class commitment:
You don't need to commit to the class until after the first session. However, to be fair to me and the limited enrollment, students should commit to attend every class from start to finish after that first class or arrange a make up plan for any missed classes.
Written test endorsement:
To take the FAA private pilot or sport pilot written test, you need an endorsement from an instructor. I will provide you with that signoff at the end of the course provided you use www.sportys.com/studybuddy to review all the assigned questions after each class and receive a score of 85% or better on a simulated written test at the end of the course (the FAA written test passing grade is 70%). You may take the practice test as many times as you wish to get the 85% score. Studybuddy is free or you can buy a premium version ($9.95) for 90 days that gives you answers with explanations and flashcards for 90 days (the premium version is recommended but do not buy it until you are ready to start reviewing questions).
